Second-placed Argyle's clash at Yeovil was one of five games in the division to fall foul of the weather, with matches at Bristol Rovers, Exeter, Newport and Notts County also postponed due to waterlogged pitches.
Chris Wilder's men made the most of it as John-Joe O'Toole flicked in the opener from a Lee Martin corner after 21 minutes.
The Cobblers extended their lead in the 54th minute after a superb breakaway which was started by Ricky Holmes and finished with Marc Richards slamming the ball home.
Luke Hendrie was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Holmes shortly afterwards as bottom club York's afternoon took another turn for the worse.

Goalkeeper Scott Shearer saved two penalties as Mansfield beat Morecambe 2-1 and move up to fifth.
The Shrimps were in front in the first minute as Kevin Ellison fired home from the edge of the box, but Mansfield were level in the 15th minute when Matty Blair's shot deflected in off a defender.
The Stags took the lead after 24 minutes when Krystian Pearce powered home a header from a Mal Benning corner.
Morecambe were then awarded their first spot-kick when Ryan Tafazolli pulled down Shaun Miller, but Shearer saved Miller's effort.
They were then given another chance to equalise from the spot five minutes from time when Jack Thomas was adjudged to have handled in the area, but again Shearer was equal to Paul Mullin's penalty.
Leyton Orient moved into the play-off places following a 1-0 win at Portsmouth.
Player-manager Kevin Nolan had crashed a shot against the crossbar shortly before Orient grabbed the winner in the 53rd minute.
Jay Simpson created the chance as he ran through on goal and the ball fell to Jobi McAnuff whose first-time shot curled into the top corner.
Accrington dropped out of the top seven with a 2-0 loss at Carlisle, Charlie Wyke putting the Cumbrians ahead after 27 minutes before Alex Gilliead added a second before half-time .
An 82nd-minute penalty from Luke Berry was enough for Cambridge to snatch a 1-0 win against Dagenham.
A stunning 25-yard strike from Cameron McGeehan earned Luton a 1-0 win at Wycombe, while Crawley claimed a 1-0 victory at managerless Stevenage as Matt Harrold grabbed the only goal shortly before half-time.
