The 46-year-old keeper was called into action after 15 minutes following an injury to Alex Lynch - and went on to keep a clean sheet in his first league match since April 2002.
Gozie Ugwu scored the only goal of the game in the third minute for a win which prevented the second-placed hosts going back to the top of the table.
Accrington Stanley moved deeper into the play-off zone with an important 1-0 win over fellow promotion hopefuls Bristol Rovers.
Sean McConville scored the 69th minute winner to move Stanley up to fifth place - two points behind their opponents with four games in hand.

Two goals from Ben Williamson put the visitors in command and after Armand Gnanduillet briefly reduced the deficit, Jimmy Spencer sealed the Cambridge victory.
Jack Compton scored a hat-trick as Yeovil moved three points clear of the relegation zone with a 3-2 win at AFC Wimbledon.
The Glovers twice came from behind to cancel out efforts from David Fitzpatrick and Tom Elliott before Compton's 63rd-minute penalty ensured the win.
But Hartlepool face being sucked back into the drop zone after a 2-0 home defeat to Exeter, whose goals came from Alex Nicholls and Joel Grant.
Two goals from Scott Boden gave Newport a 2-1 win at Morecambe, who had briefly drawn level in the 60th minute through a Shaun Miller effort.
