Gonzalo Higuain has denied saying Cristiano Ronaldo has a huge ego and is “overrated”, in remarkably candid criticism of his former Real Madrid team-mate.
Higuain was a team-mate of Ronaldo’s at the Bernabeu between 2008 and 2013 and was one of many players who have had to defer to the most deadly forward in the club’s history, with Ronaldo just two goals away from Raul’s all-time record having played over 400 fewer matches.
Ronaldo’s supremacy at Madrid is well established and Higuain’s revelations shed light on the way Ronaldo is revered at the club.
"He has a lot of ego,” Higuain said in quotes reported by Sport.
“If you don't say he's the best, he's not your friend. Cristiano thinks he's the best but he's overrated.
"I've shared a dressing room with [Lionel] Messi and one is nothing like the other."
UPDATE:
Napoli and Higuain have claimed that the interview in question never took place. A club statement read:
Regarding the alleged statements attributed to Gonzalo Higuain and reported by the magazine Don Balon, Napoli and the blues striker categorically deny he has ever granted an interview to Don Balon. Therefore the sentences attributed to Higuain are considered false and without any foundation.
