Atletico Madrid made an impressive statement of intent with a ruthless 3-0 win over Sevilla, as Jackson Martinez scored his first goal for his new club.
Unai Emery’s side lost just once at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan last season, but they were given a lesson in finishing goalscoring chances - as Atletico Madrid held firm in the face of pressure from the hosts to score two goals late on in the second half.
Fernando Torres was handed a starting place by Diego Simeone, with Oliver Torres keeping his place in the side following the opening day Liga win over Las Palmas. But Jackson made quite the impression coming on as a second half substitute - with Atletico scoring their second just moments after his introduction.
And the Colombian striker netted one of his own with just five minutes left to play, smashing home a strike from 20 yards to put the finishing touch on what was an impressive show of strength from Atletico Madrid.

TALKING POINT

Will Jackson Martinez reclaim his starting spot from Fernando Torres?
The Colombian striker was Atletico Madrid’s marquee signing this summer, but was benched for this game after a disappointing opening day display against Las Palmas. But Jackson made a big impression as a second half substitute, scoring a cracking goal to secure a 3-0 win for his new club. By contrast, Torres struggled and offered very little throughout the match. So will Jackson reclaim his place in the lineup after the international break?

MAN OF THE MATCH - Oliver Torres

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Porto, but Simeone has slotted Torres into his starting lineup straight away upon his return to his parent club. Many questioned how the loss of Arda Turan would impact on Atletico Madrid this season, but Torres looks to be his natural replacement on the right side of midfield. He was excellent against Sevilla.
