Messi, winner of arguably the sport's most prestigious individual prize on three occasions, is widely considered the favourite for the 2015 award, after helping Barcelona to the treble over the course of the year.
The Argentine tacitly seemed to acknowledge his status as the favourite for the award on Tuesday evening, as he spoke following Barcelona's emphatic 6-1 win Champions League victory over Roma.
Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo is believed to be Messi's nearest challenger for the prize, but Messi hopes his fellow club forwards join him in the top-three in January.
"I hope the podium can be Luis Suarez, Neymar and I," Messi said.
The trio have scored a combined 121 goals in 2015, although Messi does not want them to rest on their laurels.
"We're doing things well," Messi said, "but there's a long time to go.
"There are some important things coming up like the Club World Cup, and I hope we can maintain this level."
