Brazil legend Ronaldo believes it is “cowardly” that Neymar is being forced to choose between playing at either the 2016 Rio Olympics or the Copa America this summer.

Neymar is reportedly only being allowed to play in one of the two major tournaments as Barcelona want the forward to have a break during the off-season.
But given the circumstances – the special centenary event of the Copa America in June and the Olympic Games in August with Brazil as the host nation – Ronaldo believes it is unfair on Neymar having to choose.

'It's cowardly'

"This situation is very difficult for the player," he said during the presentation of the Ronaldo Academy.
"I think it's cowardly that he has to choose what competition he wants to play in.
"What we see is few care about the calendar, and we see more games and more competitions, and the players have less vacation time."
The former Brazil forward was asked what he would do if he was in Neymar’s situation and he was clear regarding his preference.

'I'd play in the Olympics'

"I would opt to play in the Olympics," the 39-year-old Ronaldo responded.
"It would be something unheard of if they could get a gold medal at the Games in Rio.
"I don't know what the situation is like, but ideally, how wonderful it would be for Neymar to tell that story."

OUR VIEW

It is a tricky situation for all parties. While it does seem unfair on Neymar having to choose between two very attractive events, it is understandable that Barcelona would not want him to be playing through June and August in what is supposed to be his off-season. However, opportunities such as these rarely present themselves and Neymar should be afforded the option of playing in both events if he so wishes – after all, he is still only 24-years-old.
