Owen and Ronaldo both attended a ceremony prior to Real Madrid’s game against Granada on January 7 as the two former Ballon d’Or winners, along with Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and Raymond Kopa, witnessed Cristiano Ronaldo parading his fourth such trophy at the Bernabeu.
Owen later tweeted: “I thought I was putting the pounds on until I saw my old mate Ronnie!”
But Ronaldo, who scored 104 goals in 177 matches for Madrid, winning two La Liga titles, seemed unimpressed with the contribution from the man he played alongside in the 2004-05 season.
In quotes reported by As, he said:
I am shocked as to how much importance my weight garners in the world we live in. I don't know why it is so important, to be honest.
Carlos, who also played at Real Madrid in the season Owen scored 16 goals in 45 games, was even more forthright in his criticism of the former Liverpool and Newcastle forward.
"I don't like these type of jokes,” he said.
Ronaldo is a very good friend of mine and we have to be careful. The thing about Ronaldo is not about his body, it's his heart, he has a very big heart.
