Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele is out for around four months with a ruptured tendon of the left thigh that will need surgery, the club have confirmed.
The France international Dembele - signed from £96.8m from Borussia Dortmund last month - was forced off on in his first league start for Barca in the 2-1 Liga win at Getafe after only 29 minutes on Saturday with tests revealing the extent of the problem.
It was only his second start for the club after playing for 71 minutes of the 3-0 win over Juventus in the Champions League in midweek.
The club believe he will return at the earliest at the outset of January, but faces rehab to return after the Spanish mid-winter break.
"The tests performed on the player of the first team Ousmane Dembélé have determined that he has a rupture of the tendon of the femoral biceps of the left thigh," said Barcelona in an official statement.
"The player will undergo surgical treatment by Dr. Sakari Orava this coming week in Finland.
"The expected downtime will be between 3 months and a half and 4 months."
