Maradona made Messi the focal point of his team at the 2010 World Cup as Argentina coach but, after looking like contenders early on, were humbled by Germany at the quarter-final stage.
The two number 10s had enjoyed a relatively tactile relationship but, according to the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, have not spoken since.
"We haven't spoken in a long time, since the World Cup [2010] we may have crossed paths once or twice," Messi told Egyptian TV.
However, despite not speaking for nearly six years, Messi insists that the pair still have a great relationship.
"He has his life, his things and I have mine. We haven't spoken at all. Considering that we don't speak to each other, I have a great relationship with him," he added.
The Argentina job was Maradona's first foray into football management since taking charge of Racing club in 1995 and ultimately ended in a disappointment with the 4-0 loss at the hands of the Germans.
