Bastian Schweinsteiger has said Manchester United will be his last club in Europe.
So what is next for the World Cup-winning 120-capped former Germany international?
Here, Press Association Sport looks at what the 32-year-old's next career move might be.
THE AMERICAN DREAM?
Bookmakers Paddy Power have Major League Soccer teams New York City FC and the Los Angeles Galaxy as favourites to land Schweinsteiger's signature and, even though the States does not offer as high a level of competition as Europe, it has managed to attract stars such as Andrea Pirlo, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in recent years. Heading to America could be a favourable option for Schweinsteiger and his new wife, tennis star Ana Ivanovic .
THE CHINESE REVOLUTION?
Chinese side Shanghai SIPG spent £48million to bring Brazilian star Hulk over from Zenit St Petersburg in June this year, with reported wages of £320,00 a week, and there will no doubt be a number of teams prepared to spend big money for a name like Schweinsteiger. Current league leaders Guangzhou Evergrande are the favourites from China to sign the German.
DOWN UNDER TO A-LEAGUE?
The German could also take his trade to Australia with teams such as Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory. The level of competition in Australia is at a much better standard than China. Bringing someone like Schweinsteiger to Australia would do a lot for the A-League as a whole, and could be a catalyst to more players making the move out there.
BECOME A QATAR STAR?
The Qatar Stars League has been relatively unheard of in world football until recently but an injection of cash from wealthy owners is leading to bigger-name stars being attracted out to the Middle East. Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi currently plays his football for Al Sadd, and they could be one of the clubs able to lure Schweinsteiger to Qatar.
WIN JOSE ROUND?
There is also the possibility of the midfielder staying at Old Trafford and trying to work his way back into boss Jose Mourinho's plans. Schweinsteiger has been faced with this problem before, playing only 15 games in his last season at Bayern Munich under Pep Guardiola. If there was no move appealing to the German, then there is nothing stopping him waiting it out for the remaining two years on his contract and trying to work his way back into Mourinho's good books.
