Marcello Lippi has come out of retirement to be named head coach of the China national team.
The appointment of the 68-year-old, who guided his native Italy to World Cup glory 10 years ago, was announced on the Chinese Football Association's website on Saturday.
Lippi announced his retirement from coaching after leading Guangzhou Evergrande to the Chinese Super League title in November 2014, saying he had had enough of the everyday rigours of club football, but stressed he had not closed the door on a national-team return.
The CFA will hold a media briefing in Beijing on Friday.
Lippi had two stints in charge of the Azzurri and also won five Serie A titles and the 1996 Champions League crown with Juventus.
