“This is not a joke!” Ferrell began by saying as he was called up on stage at the team’s launch event.
“I’m actually a member of this fine ownership group,” he confirmed.
The new franchise will enter the MLS from 2018, becoming the second team in Los Angeles with the LA Galaxy already boasting former Premier League stars Robbie Keane and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.
LAFC unveiled their crest – featuring a black-and-gold colour scheme – and confirmed that they will play in a 22,000-seat stadium next to the University of South California’s American football stadium.
The new franchise, which is to replace the now-defunct Chivas USA, also has former basketball star Magic Johnson and ex-women’s footballer Mia Hamm amongst its list of owners.
Other notable co-owners include Cardiff chairman Vincent Tan and QPR director Ruben Gnanalingam, but it was Ferrell who led the way in presenting the public face of the star-studded ownership team at the launch event.
