Arsenal climbed to second in the Premier League table after a controversial match saw Jake Livermore sent off for handball late in the first half and Alexis Sanchez missing the resultant penalty.
The Gunners were already a goal to the good after Sanchez’s slight deflection of Alex Iwobi’s shot. Then came the moment that changed the match as Livermore was adjudged to have deliberately handled Francis Coquelin’s shot by Roger East.
Sanchez missed the penalty but the damage had been done, Theo Walcott rewarding the Gunners’ numerical advantage with a second early in the second half.

Petr Cech was awarded only a yellow for upending substitute Dieumerci Mbokani and Robert Snodgrass gave Hull hope after referee East awarded a penalty on the advice of his assistant.
But Hull’s hope was short lived as another from Sanchez and a thunderbolt fourth from Granit Xhaka completed the job.

TALKING POINT

A tale of two penalties. Roger East was again the centre of controversy as he sent off Jake Livermore for handball before brandishing only a yellow for Petr Cech for upending Mbokani in the box. On reflection, with the change of laws, he may have got both calls spot on.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Alex Iwobi (Arsenal). Set up two of Arsenal’s goals today and could easily have had a couple himself. Just shaded a magnificent performance from Clucas for Hull.

Both of Alexis Sanchez's penalties in the Premier League have been saved - the first one was on Boxing Day 2014 against QPR (saved by Robert Green).
Jake Livermore picks up Hull City's 20th red card in the Premier League. It is the first time Hull have a player sent off for a handball since 28 December 2014 when Stephen Quinn received a red card for that reason in the 1-0 home loss to Leicester City.
Robert Snodgrass scores in consecutive Premier League appearances for the second time, after March 2014 when he netted for Norwich City against both Southampton and Sunderland.
