Chelsea beaten by shocking late goal against Bournemouth

Substitute Glenn Murray scored 99 seconds after coming on to secure all three points for Bournemouth against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The result was the least that the Cherries deserved for a terrific display, but the goal itself was a controversial moment. Thibaut Courtois failed to claim a corner and as the ball was turned goalwards it looked as if Murray was in an offside position. Not only that, but a Bournemouth player on the line could have been seen as preventing Gary Cahill from closing down the shot. But the decision wasn’t given and the goal stood, prompting jubilant Bournemouth celebrations.

It could have been even worse for Chelsea, with Matt Ritchie hitting the side-netting on the break and Courtois saving from Dan Gosling late on.

Bournemouth were the more dangerous of the two teams for much of the first half, playing on the counter-attack and forcing the returning Courtois into a couple of strong saves to deny Junior Stanislas and Joshua King.

Chelsea weren’t without goal threat of their own, with Eden Hazard, Pedro and Oscar all testing Artur Boruc in the Bournemouth goal, but there was a lack of composure in the Chelsea midfield and a surprising lack of cutting edge for a team with such a wealth of attacking talents at their disposal.

Diego Costa came on at half-time, but the change did little to spark the hosts into life. Chelsea could have had a penalty when Costa’s cross struck the trailing arm of Simon Francis on the floor and they were unfortunate when a slight deflection forced a wayward header from Nemanja Matic from point-blank range, but Bournemouth were the better team on the day and Murray’s impact meant they were able to celebrate a famous victory.

11’ – SAVE – Bournemouth break in numbers and Courtois makes a top save to deny Stanislas. The rebound falls to King, but he dallies and his shot (when it eventually comes) is easily blocked.

14’ – SAVE – Courtois to the rescue. This time it's King who gets the shot away, drilled in at the near post, but the keeper gets a strong hand to it and palms the ball behind for a corner.

34’ – SAVE – Hazard is denied by Boruc with a shot from the edge of the box after a lightning Chelsea break. It was a great ball by Pedro that put Hazard into space in the first place.

40’ – SAVE – The fingertips of Boruc turn Pedro's curling shot around the post after a lovely bit of skill worked space for the winger in the box.

46’ – SUB – Chelsea have made a change at the break. There will be no repeat of bib-gate: Diego Costa is on, replacing Oscar.

53’ – MISS – Willian again creates something out of nothing to fire a cross into the mixer. It takes a slight touch on the way through, which is the only excuse for Matic heading over the bar when completely unmarked and just three yards out.

61’ – CLAIM – The ball strikes the trailing arm of Francis as he slides in to block a Costa cross. The Chelsea players can't believe that it's not a penalty. Expect that to come up in the post-match if the hosts don't go on to win this.

82’ – GOAL! Bournemouth are 1-0 up and it's the sub Glenn Murray who's got it with one of his first touches of the ball. The upset is on!

84’ – CHANCE – Bournemouth break and Ritchie drives a shot fractionally wide of the far post.

Are Chelsea right to feel aggrieved? There were a lot of question-marks over the goal itself, while Chelsea also should have had a penalty for a handball. It’s clutching at straws a little to suggest that these are the reasons why they lost, but Jose Mourinho is right to feel upset about the refereeing decisions on this occasion.

Simon Francis (Bournemouth) – The win was the ultimate team effort by Bournemouth, but Francis was superb at the back and did brilliantly to shut down Hazard in the second half when he moved into a wider position. Performances such as this are needed if Bournemouth are to stay in the Premier League, and Francis embodies everything that’s good about Eddie Howe’s side. He’s composed on the ball, tireless in his running and has the quality to produce when it matters.
