Sunderland terminate Emmanuel Eboue contract after year-long FIFA ban

Sunderland have given Eboue notice of their intent to terminate his contract, which was only signed when he joined the club on March 9 and runs until the end of the current season.

A FIFA judgement has banned him taking part "in any football-related activity" for a year - or until he pays the money he owes to his former agent.

In 2013, Eboue had been ordered to settle a debt with agent Sebastien Boisseau, with a fine for non-compliance following the next year - but this latest FIFA decision indicates that the money has still not been forthcoming.

Eboue had appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport about the fine levied on him in 2014, but that was dismissed.

The former Arsenal right-back has not played a match for Sunderland yet, although there was talk that he could have featured in the weekend's game against West Brom.

Sunderland have now made a public statement, explaining: "Eboue signed a contract with Sunderland AFC until the end of the current season and the club has therefore given notice of its intention to terminate the contract. The player has two weeks in which to appeal this decision."
