Di Maria signed for United in the summer of 2014 for a club record £59.7 million but struggled to settle and has since been sold to PSG.
However, when it was clear Di Maria was on the market over the summer there was a distinct lack of reported interest from Liga sides, and the reason for that may now have been revealed.
Football Leaks have uploaded a document purported to be the agreement between Manchester United and Real Madrid for the transfer back in 2014.
Amongst the usual clauses, such as bonuses for winning the Ballon d’Or or being part of a Champions League winning squad, was a penalty clause in the event of United selling Di Maria to a Liga club.
Basically, if United sold Di Maria to a Spanish club in 2015 Real were due €50 million (£39m), €40 million (£31m) in 2016 and €30 million (£23m) in 2017, as seen below in screenshots of the document.

That clause expired in 2017 for all but one Liga club. If United sold Di Maria to Barcelona at any point after the 2017 window until the end of his contract in 2019 they would still have to pay Real €30 million.
PSG ended up signing the 28-year-old for a reported £44 million over the summer.
