King Power Stadium, Premier League - Leicester City 1 (Vardy 24’) Manchester United 1 (Schweinsteiger 45+1’)
Jamie Vardy broke a Premier League goalscoring record as Leicester earned a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at the King Power Stadium.
Manchester United managed to keep Leicester City at bay for 25 minutes, but Leicester broke from a United corner, and Christian Fuchs’ superb through-ball was finished by Vardy to put them ahead.
United then collapsed in the face of pressure, losing the ball and across the defence, but somehow managed to prevent Leicester scoring again in the half. Then, with a minute remaining of injury time in the first half, Daley Blind’s corner found a barely-marked Bastian Schweinsteiger a few yards out, who headed into equalise.
In the second half, United dominated possession and continued to press with little sophistication, and Leicester were happy to sit off them. It was Leicester who almost scored when Riyad Mahrez slipped in Leonardo Ulloa, who scuffed a shot straight at David de Gea.
United had the ball for almost all of the match, but did not once look like scoring after Schweinsteiger’s equaliser.
KEY EVENTS
9’ - ROONEY SHOT - Rooney receives the ball on the left. He edges into the box and tries to curl into the top corner only to find Schmeichel ready to stop.
24’ - GOAL! Leicester City 1-0 Manchester United - Vardy scores - Mata's cross from the left is caught by Schmeichel. He releases the ball quickly as Leicester come down the right wing. Vardy splits the defence to run onto an excellent Fuchs' through ball and finish calmly past De Gea.
31’ - MAHREZ SHOT - Mahrez is slipped into the box on the inside left, and his low shot is blocked well by De Gea.
45+1’ - GOAL! Leicester City 1-1 Manchester United. Schweinsteiger scores - Corner on the right after Young's cross is headed behind by Drinkwater. Blind takes with his left, and Schweinsteiger's left unmarked to head in from a couple of yards out.
49’ - SCHMEICHEL SAVE - Young curls in a cross on the right and Schweinsteiger forces a good save from Schmeichel. Rooney dives into it and sends a header wide of goal from a couple of yards out.
66’ - ULLOA SHOT - Ulloa is slipped in by Mahrez, he comes onto his right to set up an easy shot in the box, and he scuffs it straight at De Gea.
KEY STATS
The Red Devils have lost just one of their last 10 Premier League matches (W6 D3 L1).
Jamie Vardy has scored in 11 consecutive Premier League games.
TALKING POINT
Manchester United are going nowhere. They had about three quarters of the ball and only scored as many as Leicester City because of a set piece. They failed to threaten for almost all of the game, and looked only marginally better without Wayne Rooney. It is time to change the manager before it gets worse and players like Juan Mata ask to leave.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Bastian Schweinsteiger (Manchester United): The midfielder helped United keep possession for most of the match, but his most important intervention was, for the second game in a row, forcing or scoring the equaliser for his side. He needs assistance from those ahead of him
