Paul Scholes wants Manchester United to sign Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane and Luka Modric

With Jose Mourinho heavily touted to replace Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford over the close season, former United and England midfielder suggests his old club should consider offering Madrid serious money to land two of their best players in French defender Varane and Croatian playmaker Modric.

He also wants United to pull out all the stops to land former United midfielder Paul Pogba from Italian champions Juventus.

'"I’d like Luka Modric. How old is he now? Might be a bit too old, but he’s a great player," said Scholes.

"I like Raphael Varane. I said realistic and I’m picking Real Madrid players?

Van Gaal's side are struggling to keep their season on track after a damaging past few weeks, and Scholes has been scathing in his criticism of United this season.

They lost 2-0 at Liverpool n the Europa League last 16 second leg before rescuing a 1-1 draw with West Ham United at Old Trafford in the FA Cup last eight on Sunday.

United are also five points behind fourth-placed Arsenal in their bid to qualify for next season's Champions League.
