Rooney's poor form this season put Jose Mourinho under pressure to make a change and the United captain was benched for the match against the reigning champions.
Juan Mata played as a No. 10 behind lone striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic with Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard on the wings.
“Rashford plays and Lingard plays," Mourinho said. "They are quick, the game is going to be intense and fast the way Leicester play... .and the way they stretch the game, and when our main striker is Zlatan we need fast people to surround him."
Mourinho resisted the chance to give Paul Pogba some more support in midfield as he started in a two with Ander Herrera.
Leicester fielded record signing Islam Slimani in attack with Jamie Vardy.
