A serious injury suffered by Billy Jones overshadowed a late, but most likely futile, fightback from Sunderland against West Ham on Saturday.
Needing a win to keep even the slimmest of relegation hopes alive Sunderland made the worst possible start when Andre Ayew opened the scoring for the away side as Andy Carroll's mishit shot found its way into his path.
Sunderland had just gone past 700 minutes without a Premier League goal when Wahbi Khazri's corner went all the way in, as Victor Anichebe blocked off Darren Randolph.
Minutes after the break though West Ham were ahead again as James Collins headed in Robert Snodgrass' corner.
As the game stagnated it was broken by a nasty fall from Jones which saw him down for a considerable period of time as he received treatment and oxygen.
His replacement was Fabio Borini who slotted home a late equaliser after a terrible piece of goalkeeping from Randolph but they couldn't find a winner despite a red for Sam Byram five minutes from the end and the point probably won't be enough for the Black Cats.

TALKING POINT

Is David Moyes the right man to lead Sunderland in the Championship? It is not official but Sunderland are as good as relegated. They have a game over Hull City but the gap is nine points, there is no chance they are getting out of this. Sunderland have cheated fate on more than one occasions in recent years and this relegation feels as if it has been a long time coming. The club need to start to plan accordingly to ensure they can come back at the first time of asking as it appears rivals Newcastle will. The mood amongst the fans suggest they don't want Moyes to be leading that promotion push. This horrific season suggests they're probably right.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Wahbi Khazri (Sunderland) but really no-one deserved the man of the match award, so poor was the standard of play. Khazri's corner was nice and he generally looked bright and inventive throughout the game. He worked very hard for the team as well. Having said that his set-pieces were terrible in the final portion of the match as Sunderland were chasing the game. That he wins this accolade speaks volume of how poor both teams were.

PLAYER RATINGS

Sunderland - Pickford 5, Jones 5, O'Shea 5, Denayer 5, Manquillo 5, Ndong 4, Cattermole 4, Gibson 5, Khazri 6, Defoe 5, Anichebe 6. Subs - Januzaj 5, Borini 6, Kone 5.
West Ham - Randolph 4, Byram 4, Fonte 5, Collins 6, Masuaku 5, Fernandes 5, Kouayte 5, Ayew 6, Lanzini 5, Snodgrass 5, Carroll 6. Subs - Nordtveit 5, Calleri 5.

KEY MOMENTS

5' - GOAL! SUNDERLAND 0-1 WEST HAM (AYEW) Well that didn't take too long did it! Slight role reversal here as Carroll squares (shanks his shot) the ball to Ayew having picked up the ball from Byram. Ayew brings the ball down and prods it past Pickford.
26' - GOAL! SUNDERLAND 1-1 WEST HAM (KHAZRI) SUNDERLAND HAVE SCORED A GOAL!!! Well there you go. It had just been over 700 minutes since Sunderland's last Premier League goal and then they go and get one and it's straight from a corner! Khazri's set-piece curls straight in as Anichebe blocks off Randolph.
47' - GOAL! SUNDERLAND 1-2 WEST HAM (COLLINS) And this time Snodgrass' delivery is excellent. Collins makes an intelligent run and he gets a flick into the corner. West Ham are back in front!
83' - There's a stretcher on and Jones is receiving oxygen. The medics are rightly taking their time and Borini is waiting to come on.
87' - GOAL! SUNDERLAND 2-2 WEST HAM (BORINI) Oh that's poor from Randolph. He comes to catch the ball and drops it. He then palms it into the path of Borini who slot home. Some questionable defending on the line as well.
90+5' - RED CARD! (BYRAM) And West Ham will play the last five minutes or so with ten men as Byram is shown his second yellow for a late challenge on Januzaj.
