Karius, who signed for the Reds for £4.7million from Mainz in May, clashed with his own team-mate Dejan Lovren, while attempting to clear a cross during the game on Wednesday night.
The break, which has been assessed by a medical team in the United States where the team are currently undergoing pre-season training, is reported to require surgery according to the Daily Mirror.
It had previously been thought that Liverpool's summer acquisition would look to take the number one spot, ahead of Simon Mignolet.
Adding insult to injury, the break occurred after the former Germany Under-21 decided to forego the Rio Olympics with his national team, in pursuit of Mignolet's place.
Speaking just a couple of weeks ago, the 23-year-old said: "We [Karius and manager Jurgen Klopp] agreed together I wouldn't be going [to Rio].
"First I spoke with Jurgen and then together we spoke with the German people who wanted me to go. The priority is the club. It's more important that I am available for the start of the season.”
