Premier League, Old Trafford - Manchester United 1 (Rojo 23) Bournemouth 1 (King 40 pen)
Zlatan Ibrahimovic had a penalty saved and somehow avoided a red card as Manchester United drew 1-1 at home to 10-man Bournemouth.
United looked in a rampant mood and crated numerous chances early on, eventually taking the lead through Marcos Rojo, but were pegged back by a Josh King penalty after Phil Jones had felled Marc Pugh with a clumsy tackle.
As the half was drawing to close though the game turned ugly, with first Tyrone Mings stamping on Ibrahimovic’s head and then the Swede getting retribution from a corner by elbowing Mings in the face. Neither received even a yellow card but Andrew Surman, who gave Ibrahimovic a push in the aftermath, did and that was his second of the game. Referee Kevin Friend needed to be reminded of this fact.
The hosts dominated against 10 men in the second half but couldn't find a way past what had transformed into a resolute defence, with Ibrahimovic having the best chance to score from the penalty spot, only to be denied by Boruc. Paul Pogba also missed a pair of glorious chances in stoppage time.
The result means Jose Mourinho’s side have squandered their opportunity to move above sixth place while for Bournemouth it’s a vital point and they remain 14th, five points above the relegation zone.
TALKING POINT
What will happen to Mings and Ibrahimovic? Mings’ stamp on the head of Ibrahimovic was appalling to watch and looked deliberate as replays showed him glancing down at the striker as he did it. It was calculated and incredibly dangerous and warrants a long ban. The referee didn’t see the incident, so you imagine one is coming. As for Ibrahimovic, he deserved a red card but Friend spoke to him at length after the elbow, suggesting he had seen it, so whether or not he faces retrospective action is up for debate.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Artur Boruc (Bournemouth): Coming into the game he’d conceded 20 goals in the last seven league games but he was brilliant. The penalty save was exceptional and stands out, but it was only one of seven he made in the game and Bournemouth can thank him more than anyone else for this point.
