United battle Chelsea for £86m Griezmann

Manchester United are going to go up against Chelsea this summer for the signature of Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann, according to the Sun. Because of his £86m release clause, anyone who matches the figure can talk to the French attacker, and Antonio Conte wants to use his bottomless pit of money to sign him. Jose Mourinho and Manchester United have long had Griezmann as their number one target, and believe they are currently leading the race.
Paper Round's view: United's interest is longstanding, and if they had any sense they should have been in contact with him for two seasons to start persuading him to make the move. United can call on Paul Pogba, his friend, to help attract him, but Chelsea are the only one of the two who can currently guarantee Champions League football next season. With the 2018 World Cup fast approaching, that could be a decisive factor.

Dier calls on England fans to show respect

England midfielder Eric Dier has called on England's fans to behave at Wembley on Sunday night, in the aftermath of a terrorist attack in London. Dier said, "Wherever we go they’re always fantastic, the support they given us is amazing, but all we ask is they support us in the right way and be respectful. And of course because of the dreadful stuff that’s happened over the last couple of days in London, we just hope the fans will be very respectful of that."
Paper Round's view: Most of the England fans will be happy to observe a minute's silence or whatever is suggested in respect of the attacks. But Dier is saying this because of everything that could follow. There were the usual, tedious chants about World Wars and the IRA against Germany, and no doubt something similar will be on show throughout the game on Sunday.

Smalling injury blow

Chris Smalling was sent home from England duty after suffering a knee injury, just days after he injured Manchester United's other English central defender, Phil Jones, who broke his toe. Manchester United now have just Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind to pick in central defence as they begin their run-in to reach the top four and win the Europa League. Mourinho's mood will not be helped given Raheem Sterling and John Stones were rested against Germany.
Paper Round's view: In truth, it's hard to see what the panic is for. Jones and Smalling have been poor for much of the season; Blind and Rojo are not significantly worse and may actually be better in the long run. These injuries might be important not because of the quality of the players, but the importance of quantity as the matches stack up. Mourinho will have some succour given Pogba's hamstring injury is not as serious as feared.

Wenger: I almost signed Suarez

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claimed that he had an agreement with Luis Suarez for the forward to join his club but was misinformed about a £40m release clause. Wenger said, "We had an agreement with the player. We had been wrongly advised that he had a clause, with a minimal clause, but we had an agreement with the player. You can ask him. I'm convinced he wanted to join us and then they sold him. They kept him one more year, improved his contract and promised to sell him the year later to a club abroad."
Paper Round's view: Add Suarez to the list of players that Wenger almost signed. Alex Ferguson has had three great teams, whereas Wenger has almost had three great teams. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cristiano Ronaldo and others were all apparently set to join Arsenal only for Wenger to somehow miss out. At some point it might make it clear that he is not ruthless enough to succeed.
