Manchester City target Mendy after Silva transfer

Pep Guardiola is set to continue his transfer spend after securing the signature of Bernardo Silva from Monaco for around £43m. Manchester City will focus on strengthening their defence, and will return to Monaco to sign their promising left-back, Benjamin Mendy, for £30m. Mendy impressed in the Champions League this season and Monaco are prepared to see him leave.
Paper Round's view: Mendy was one of the best defenders in the Champions League last season, and his attacking play was some of the best from any defender in several seasons. His excellent crossing and approach play, coupled with his ease on the ball, make it easy to see why he is an attractive player to the top clubs in general, and Pep Guardiola specifically. This would be an excellent continuation of their transfer plans this summer.

City also target Spurs' Walker

City have £300m to spend this summer, and will add to their defence not just with Mendy, but with Spurs right-back Kyle Walker. He would cost more than Mendy, and will require double his existing £70,000-a-week wages. Walker will replace Pablo Zabaleta at right-back, as Zabaleta, Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna have all left the club this week.

Paper Round's view: Walker doesn't have the talent of Mendy by any stretch, but he is a proven Premier League perfomer. At 26, he is unlikely to improve as much as Mendy, and his attacking play is enthusiastic without ever being desperately threatening. Nevertheless, his pace on the wings would be an improvement upon both the ageing Sagna and Zabaleta, and they clearly don't need to worry about value for money.

Wenger drops Cech for FA Cup final

Arsene Wenger has decided to drop Petr Cech from the FA Cup final starting line-up, despite injury concerns over most of his central defence. Ospina has not played since the beginning of April, and while Cech suffered a slight injury in training, he believed that he had recovered sufficiently to keep his place in the first eleven. The decision comes at a time when he is fighting to regain the faith of the Arsenal support.
Paper Round's view: Wenger has a track record of handling injuries, with his players constantly 'two weeks away' from fitness. It's hard to trust that he's made the right decision over Cech, especially as Ospina is a goalkeeper who struggles to catch the ball at even the easiest times - a notable weakness for the position. Realistically, it doesn't matter. Chelsea are so much better than Arsenal that Cech or Ospina would be unlikely to make the difference between the sides.

Conte set for £40m contract

Chelsea will attempt to keep Antonio Conte out of Inter Milan's clutches by offering him a £9.6m-a-year deal to stay at Stamford Bridge until 2021. That would net him almost £40m before taxes. Inter Milan's new Chinese offers have made repeated big-money offers to Conte to tempt him back to Italy, but Conte hopes to find a permanent home so that his family can move with him to London.
Paper Round's view: There is a risk giving any manager such a long contract. Conte has done brilliantly so far, but there's no evidence yet that he can do especially well in Europe, as he rarely excelled for Juventus in the competition. Fortunately for Conte, there are few serious alternatives for Chelsea at the moment, with none of the best managers - except perhaps Luis Enrique, fatigued by Barcelona - available this summer. They may be overpaying for Conte, but it makes sense in the circumstances.
