Sunderland relegated after late drama, 10-year stay in Premier League over

Sunderland were relegated from the Premier League in dramatic circumstances on Saturday as they lost to Bournemouth and Southampton had an injury-time penalty saved against Hull City.

Josh King struck in the 88th minute at the Stadium of Light, meaning David Moyes’ Sunderland were heading into the Championship as a result of their defeat, and the fact Hull were still drawing. But then Hull conceded a penalty almost immediately, only to see goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic tip Dusan Tadic’s spot-kick wide.

In truth, Sunderland showed more fight than in a lot of previous games, Jermain Defoe guilty of squandering a couple of glorious chances and Artur Boruc in form between the Bournemouth sticks. Yet the damage had been done long before this fixture, David Moyes' side now winless in nine home matches since beating Watford before Christmas (D4, L5).

Sunderland drop back down to the second tier for the first time since 2007 and for the fourth time in total.

29’ - CHANCE! Ndong heads it back into the box and it’s straight to Defoe’s feet coming over his shoulder but he hits it straight at the keeper. Should have scored!

50’ - SAVE! Defoe sprints clear and feeds Borini and he strikes a fierce shot at Boruc and it’s at a good height for the keeper.

67’ - SAVE! Boruc to the rescue again as Honeyman’s shot is beaten away at the near post. Lovely reverse pass from Borini!

75' - A FIGHT BREAKS OUT: Well, sort of. It’s all spilling over as a challenge from Borini causes a massive scrum of pushing and shoving. Harry Artur and Borini are booked.

88’ – GOAL! Sunderland 0-1 Bournemouth: And that looks like it’s over for Sunderland as Fraser lays it on a plats for King to slot home.
