Sunderland fought back from a goal down and Steven Pienaar’s second-half sending off to grab a first league win of the season for under-fire David Moyes.
Dan Gosling put the home side ahead in just the 11th minute as Bournemouth totally dominated the opening half. But Sunderland looked a different team after the break and Victor Anichebe deservedly drew them level before a moment of madness from Steven Pienaar saw the South African sent off.
Already on a yellow, Pienaar’s studs up challenge on Stanislas probably merited a straight red and it invited wave after wave of Bournemouth attacks on his side, Jordan Pickford keeping the Black Cats in the game with a string of fine saves.
And when Adam Smith brought down Anichebe in the box, Jermain Defoe stepped up to score his 149th Premier League goal and complete the smash and grab that will relieve some pressure on Moyes.
The result means that Sunderland remain bottom, level with Swansea on five points, but only two behind Hull City. Bournemouth stay 12th.

TALKING POINT

Sunderland’s fighting spirit. Steven Pienaar’s sending off should have spelt disaster for Sunderland but they rolled up their sleeves and battled for their boss. It could be a crucial three points by the end of the season.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Jordan Pickford (Sunderland): Close between the keeper and the excellent Victor Anichebe but it was his saves that allowed his team to grab the points.
