Premier League, White Hart Lane: Tottenham 2 (Kolarov OG 9', Alli 37') Manchester City 0
Pep Guardiola's perfect start to the Premier League season came to an end as Manchester City fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs' victory sees them climb up to within a point of City at the top of the table, with Liverpool one point further back in third place.
An own goal by Aleksandr Kolarov saw Spurs go ahead inside 10 minutes, with Dele Alli making it two shortly before half-time.
It was no more than Spurs deserved: they dominated the match, and missed a penalty in the second half which could have seen them free and clear.
Guardiola's run of victories always had to end sooner or later - but the location and manner in which they did so will be taken as a sign of things to come. Tottenham's victory makes the Premier League suddenly seem all the more competitve, and Spurs fans will now be dreaming of a second consecutive run at the Premier League title.
TALKING POINT
Fantastic Spurs show the way to beat City: Celtic showed in the week how City can be beaten and Spurs built on that to inflict the first defeat on Pep Guardiola as City boss. This was down to a combination of things; firstly City were absolutely awful but secondly Spurs were fantastic. They were winning every ball, covering every blade of grass and not giving City a moment's rest. One of the telling points in the game came when Bravo had to take a goal kick and Spurs pushed right up on their defensive line. This gave Bravo no chance of passing out and building from the back and forced him to kick long. Guardiola now has to figure out a way for his team to cope with high-intensity teams.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Victor Wanyama (Spurs): It could have been any number of Spurs players really; Danny Rose and Kyle Walker were great again whilst Alli looks like he is getting back to his best but Wanyama was fantastic. Pochettino said a few weeks ago that without Mousa Dembele "Tottenham does not exist." Now this was a joke of course but this without their talisman, not to mention Harry Kane, this was a huge test. Wanyama was tasked with replacing Dembele and he had to play three quarters of the game without Eric Dier, who started on the bench. He may have been booked early on but he was everywhere, always nipping in and taking the ball off City's attacking players. Furthermore he broke forward well and although his decision making was sometimes questionable he gave Spurs real energy.
PLAYER RATINGS
Spurs: Lloris 7, Walker 7, Alderweireld 7, Vertonghen 6, Rose 8, Wanyama 8, Alli 8, Sissoko 7, Eriksen 6, Lamela 6, Son 7. Subs: Dier 6, Nkoudou 5, Janssen 5.
City: Bravo 4, Zabaleta 4, Otamendi 4, Stones 6, Kolarov 3, Fernandinho 5, Fernando 4, Silva 5, Navas 5, Sterling 5, Aguero 5. Subs: Gundogan 5, Iheanacho 5, Sane 6.
KEY MOMENTS
9' - GOAL! 1-0 SPURS (Kolarov, OG): Oh that's just not gone well for Aleksandar Kolarov. Danny Rose gets free down the left and sends in a fantastic ball. No-one at the front post can get on the end of it but Kolarov ungainly deflects it into his own net.
37' - GOAL! 2-0 SPURS (Alli, 37): That's a sensational pass from Son. Spurs push forward and Alli makes a bit of a hash of things. Son picks the ball up though and slides a wonderful pass through the gap into Alli's path. He doesn't even look up as he slots the ball past Bravo first time. Cracking goal and City's unbeaten run looks in real trouble.
42' - HANDBAGS! Bit of afters between Navas and Rose as the latter refuses to give the ball back for a throw. It's the Tottenham man who's booked though.
64' - PENALTY TO SPURS! This is absolutely appalling from City, awful. They can't clear their lines on multiple occasions and then Alli bursts into the box. Fernandinho clatters him from behind and gives away the foul.
65' - PENALTY SAVED! Fair play to Bravo he hasn't been good so far but he does well to get across his left to make the save. Spurs can't get anything from the follow-up.
80' - SAVE! That's a terrific save, the best of the game from Lloris. Aguero tries to get a shot way and it takes a deflection which forces Lloris to adjust superbly and tip it over.
