What the world looked like when Spurs last finished above Arsenal

There is a whole generation of Arsenal fans who have never seen their side finish below Tottenham Hotpsur in their lifetimes.

That will all change on Sunday if Arsenal lose to Tottenham in the North London derby. A win in the final derby at White Hart Lane will ensure Spurs finish above their rivals for the first time since 1995.
The world was a very different place when Arsenal, managed by Stewart Houston after George Graham had been sacked in disgrace following a bung scandal, came 12th in the table and Tottenham, led by Gerry Francis, finished seventh...

FOOTBALL

Blackburn Rovers were champions, a 20-year-old Robbie Fowler won the PFA Young Player of the Year award and Eric Cantona was suspended after having attacked a Crystal Palace fan with a kung-fu kick in January. Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw was still in utero at the end of the season, being born in July.

POLITICS

John Major was Prime Minister, but had to fight a leadership election to remain leader of the Conservative party, meanwhile Theresa May was working as head of European affairs at the Association for Payment Clearing Services. Nelson Mandela was only one year into his job as president of South Africa, while over in America, Donald Trump was preparing to buy the Miss World Pageant.

NEWS

Barings Bank collapsed in February thanks to the reckless actions of rogue trader Nick Leeson. The OJ Simpson murder trial was in full swing and would not deliver its ‘not guilty’ verdict until October. Amazon sold its first ever book.

FILM

In November of 1995, James Bond returned to the screen with Pierce Brosnan starring in Goldeneye. The first Toy Story was the highest grossing film in Amerca while the Oscar went to Braveheart, which also won best director for Mel Gibson.

MUSIC

The year 1995 was a golden era for music in the UK charts. East 17’s Stay Another Day was No. 1 heading into the year and would be followed by Cotton Eye Joe. The Outhere Brothers topped the charts with Boom Boom Boom in July and Take That, with Back For Good and Never Forget, and Oasis, with Some Might Say, enjoyed chart success. Coolio and Shaggy almost made it to the top of the charts with Gangsta’s Paradise and Boombastic, respectively.

TV

Hollyoaks had not even aired, with the Channel 4 soap making its debut in October. The highest rated show of the year was Martin Bashir’s infamous Panorama interview with Princess Diana, which drew 22.78 million viewers.
No Hollyoaks? What a world to live in. Thankfully humanity has progressed since then, although Tottenham have remained stuck behind their rivals. Until Sunday at least.
