Premier League, Turf Moor – Burnley 1 (Barnes 89') Stoke City 0
Burnley climbed into the Premier League top four after Ashley Barnes’ last-gasp winner secured a 1-0 win against Stoke City at Turf Moor.
Sean Dyche’s side climbed above Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham – who all have the chance to leapfrog the Clarets on Wednesday evening – to sit in a provisional qualifying spot for the Champions League play-offs.
The hosts were indebted to poor finishing from the visitors, who spurned a flurry of openings, including a shot against the woodwork from Peter Crouch, before Barnes struck in the 89th minute.
"Tonight was a different style of getting a result. It was an ugly game at times in harsh conditions," Dyche said afterwards.
"We found a way to win and a real fine goal. Sometimes that's football. We're not the real deal, we're a side that are improving. We're having a real go at what we can achieve this season. The fans and the town have got to enjoy these times."
Mark Hughes, conversely, was less than happy with the final score.
"I thought the lads were fantastic and matched everything Burnley threw at us," he said.
"I thought when we were able to get the ball down, we were the team trying to create openings in wide areas and get good balls in. It's hard to take, Burnley didn't deserve to win."
