After his goal against Brighton on Tuesday Harry Kane has moved to within four goals of Mohamed Salah. Can he catch the Egyptian in the top scorer race at home and abroad? We investigate…

European Golden Shoe race: Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, Lionel Messi, Ciro Immobile

The European Golden Shoe is the award handed out every year for the top scorer in Europe.
However, it is not as simple as just finding who knocked in the most goals and giving them an award - the league you play in has a say.
If you play in one of the top five leagues your goal tally is doubled, if you play in one the leagues ranked between 6-21 then your figure is multiplied by 1.5. Anything lower and it stays as it is.
For example, Salah has scored 30 goals in the Premier League so he would have 60 points. However Benfica’s Jonas has notched 33 times in Portugal, which only equates to 49.5 goals.
Got a handle on that? Good, let’s run through the contenders.

PREMIER LEAGUE

Mohamed Salah
Team: Liverpool
Current goals: 30
Theoretical points: 60
Games remaining: Four
Salah has been one of the surprises of the season and has gone to a completely different level this season. His next target is the 34 goal Premier League record currently held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer. After that, who knows…

Harry Kane
Team: Tottenham Hotspur
Current goals: 26
Theoretical points: 52
Games remaining: Four
Kane has won the Golden Boot in the past two seasons but has struggled with injury yet again. However he tends to end the season well and is looking to silence the critics after the debacle of the Stoke goal…

LA LIGA

Lionel Messi
Team: Barcelona
Current goals: 29
Theoretical points: 58
Games remaining: Five
Messi has one game more than Salah remaining and after this weekend both the league and the cup could be wrapped up meaning Messi can focus purely on his goal-scoring…
Cristiano Ronaldo
Team: Real Madrid
Current goals: 23
Theoretical points: 46
Games remaining: Six
After a slow start to the season Ronaldo is hitting top gear at the perfect time for Real’s Champions League campaign. He’s flying in the league too, with an astonishing 15 goals in his last seven La Liga matches. He has a way to make up, but don’t rule him out.

Luis Suarez
Team: Barcelona
Current goals: 23
Theoretical points: 46
Games remaining: Five
Like Ronaldo, Suarez struggled early on but he’s starting to hit form. However unlike Ronaldo it’s hard to see him going on the sort of freak scoring run that the Real forward is capable of. We wouldn’t be betting on Suarez sadly…

SERIE A

Ciro Immobile
Team: Lazio
Current goals: 27
Theoretical points: 54
Games remaining: Six
Like Salah one of the big surprises in Europe this season. Immobile has fired in 27 goals so far, leading Lazio’s push for Champions League football. He’s only three behind Salah and has every chance of catching up to the Egyptian.
Mauro Icardi
Team: Inter Milan
Current goals: 25
Theoretical points: 50
Games remaining: Five
Icardo is in the mix after his goal against Cagliari on Tuesday and he has to be on the list. The reason is that Icardi is one of those players who could just get back-to-back hat-tricks or hit four in a game. Of course he’s also got the ability to not score for the rest of the season.

BUNDESLIGA

Robert Lewandowski
Team: Bayern Munich
Current goals: 27
Theoretical points: 54
Games remaining: Four
Lewandowski will always have the disadvantage of playing in the Bundesliga, where only 34 games are played but 27 goals is still a fantastic number. There are four games left, and you’d imagine he might be rested for some of those given the European clash with Real Madrid so Lewandowski may struggle here. However it’s worth pointing out that second and third top scorers are Kevin Volland on 14 and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who scored 13 in the first-half of the season!

LIGUE 1

Edinson Cavani
Team: PSG
Current goals: 25
Theoretical points: 50
Games remaining: Five
The final representative from the top five leagues and it will take something special for Cavani to catch those above him. Yes, PSG are so dominant in France they could easily win all their remaining games 5-0 but Cavani is such a frustrating player it’s hard to see him converting a sufficient enough of chances.

PRIMEIRA LIGA

Jonas
Team: Benfica
Current goals: 33
Theoretical points: 49.5
Games remaining: Four
The only player outside of the big five leagues and frankly due to the way the points system work Jonas has nothing more than an outside shout. It’s a real shame given Jonas’ incredible scoring record this season which stands at 33 goals in 28 games with a goal coming once every 72 minutes. However he’s going to need to get to 40 goals to just reach where Salah is now.
