The likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Jordan Henderson all missed the games against Germany and Brazil due to injury.
But all of the withdrawals were available for their Premier League clubs on Saturday and, here, Press Association Sport looks at how they performed.
Harry Kane
The Tottenham striker, wearing a bandage around his right knee, played 75 minutes of the north London derby against Arsenal. It was one of those games for the 24-year-old. Nothing went in his favour. Despite drawing a save from Petr Cech early on, Kane looked off the pace and lacking his usual sharpness in front of goal.
Dele Alli
Alli was hauled off along with Kane with 15 minutes remaining after an ineffective display where he struggled to get on the ball. Mauricio Pochettino may have brought his star duo off early to protect them ahead of Tuesday's trip to Dortmund in the Champions League.
Harry Winks
Tottenham midfielder Winks was brought on after 62 minutes as Spurs looked for a way back into the game. Despite a couple of nice touches, he struggled to inspire his side with the damage already done.
Danny Drinkwater
The midfielder rejected the chance to join up with the national team in favour of working on his fitness at Chelsea. He did not start against West Brom but was eased into the action by Antonio Conte in the 67th minute with Chelsea already 4-0 ahead.
Raheem Sterling
Sterling lasted 84 minutes of City's 2-0 win at Leicester. The former Liverpool player impressed as part of an inter-changing attacking quartet which included David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane.
Fabian Delph
Delph was a doubt to feature at the King Power Stadium but he proved his fitness and played the full match for Pep Guardiola, appearing very comfortable in his new left-back position.
Jordan Henderson
Henderson played the full 90 minutes of Liverpool's comfortable 3-0 victory over Southampton. The midfielder produced a solid performance, covering a lot of ground with his side in control.
