Aaron Mooy struck as Huddersfield Town continued their perfect start in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Newcastle United.
The Australian’s fine strike shortly after half-time proved the difference between the two promoted sides, with the visitors left ruing Ayoze Perez’s woeful miss from six yards.
Huddersfield dominated the opening half with Mooy impressing as he dominated the midfield next to Philip Billing.
He got his reward for his hard work after the restart as he played a neat one-two with Elias Kachunga before curling a shot past Rob Elliot and into the net.
The result puts Huddersfield second in the league behind Manchester United and means they are the first Premier League debutants since 1993 to win their opening two matches.
After midweek cup duty, the Terriers next welcome Southampton to the John Smith’s Stadium, while Newcastle will aim for their first points against West Ham.

TALKING POINT

Huddersfield are like Liverpool, but they can defend. After working together so long the comparisons between Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and his best man David Wagner are inevitable but they are just. Wagner's Huddersfield like to press high and put their opponents under pressure and it worked very well against a luck-lustre Newcastle. The main difference between the two teams is that you don't start panicking when they have to defend. Huddersfield are well drilled, when the full-backs push on either Mooy or Billing, or even both, drop back to split the centre-backs. When they're defending they can become a very compact back six. Bar the Perez chance they looked good from set-pieces as well.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield): A big summer signing over the summer as he joined permanently from Manchester City, Mooy doesn't look out of place in the Premier League. Together with Billing he controlled the game and Newcastle couldn't get a sniff in the centre of the pitch. Mooy is the complete midfielder, he can tackle, pass and as seen by his goal, shoot. His work-rate helping his defenders is admirable and he even takes set-pieces at times as well. A valuable asset.

PLAYER RATINGS

Huddersfield Town: Lossl 6, Smith 5, Zanka 5, Schlinder 6, Lowe 7, Mooy 8, Billing 7, Kachunga 7, Ince 6, Van La Parra 7, Mounie 6. Subs: Quaner 5, Palmer 5, Hefele 5.
Newcastle United: Elliot 5, Manquillo 6, Lascelles 4, Clark 4, Mbemba 5, Hayden 4, Merino 6, Atsu 5, Perez 5, Ritchie 5, Gayle 4. Subs: Joselu 6, Diame 5, Murphy 5.

KEY MOMENTS

16' - TERRIFIC SAVE! That's an excellent save from Lossl. Perez plays it to Ritchie and he curls a shot with his right. It's creeping in until Lossl gets finger tips to it and sends it wide.
20' - CLOSE! Van La Parra twists and turns down the left but he can't beat Manquillo and has to settle for a corner. That's the best delivery of the game so far as Mounie is really close to getting a flick-on. Elliot came out flapping but he was nowhere.
50' - GOAL! HUDDERSFIELD 1-0 NEWCASTLE (MOOY) Lovely, lovely goal from Mooy. He picks the ball up about 25 yards out. Plays a clever one-two with Kachunga and curls the ball into the corner of the net. Great strike and the stadium is buzzing.
68' - SAVE! Joselu plays a one-two with Atsu and just about stabs a shot away. Lossl makes the save and tips it wide. Great chance from the corner as Clark's header finds Perez but he hooks it over.
