Raheem Sterling's late volley snatched a 1-1 draw for 10-man Manchester City, but their performance delivered more questions than answers as they struggled to create against a disciplined Everton defence.
City dominated possession in the first half, but it took them 34 minutes to really look like scoring, David Silva smacking a drive against the base of the post. Then, a minute late, they were behind, Leroy Sane foolishly keeping in play a ball he could have let out, thus allowing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to lay on Wayne Rooney's 200th Premier League goal.
And things soon got worse for the home side, Kyle Walker - deservedly booked for an earlier foul - shown a second, harsh yellow card after he was adjudged to have barged Calvert-Lewin.
The man advantage did not really help Everton, but City were largely frustrated, only mustering an equaliser in the 82nd minute when the hitherto excellent Mason Holgate headed onto Raheem Sterling's laces; he drilled a fine volley past Jordan Pickford.
City then did all they could to force a winner, Sterling crossing when he should have shot and Davy Klaassen hooking a dangerous ball away at the last second. But there was no glaring opportunity, the most notable event a second yellow card - also harsh - shown to Morgan Schneiderlin, leaving both sides frustrated and relieved in equal measure.

TALKING POINT

City's formation does not work that well. Pep Guardiola has two excellent strikers, and naturally, he wants to play both of them. But he also has two excellent wingers who stretch the play, create chances and score goals - plus Bernardo Silva. If he played one defender less, he could include one more attacker, and City would be even harder to combat.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Phil Jagielka (Everton): An enormous performance, tackling, blocking, marking and cajoling; had he not played, City would have won.

KEY MOMENTS

34’ - POST! City are turning it up now, and Aguero, given time, lifts a lovely pass with the outside of his right foot for Silva, free to his left; Keane is enjoying a reverie all of his own. Silva controls, sets, and slams a drive off the base of the near post!
35’ - GOAL! Manchester City 0-1 Everton (Rooney). WAYNE ROONEY SCORES HIS 200TH PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL! So what happens here is that Sane, on the touchline, tries to keep the ball in play but can only find Calvert-Lewin; he finds Holgate to whom Kompany is drawn for no reason and now in space, accepts the return. He then delays the cross beautifully, turning inside to leave Kompany sliding off like a toboggan going down the wrong hill and crosses low for Rooney who, ignored by Stones, allows the ball across his body and sidefoots firmly under Ederson; the shot catches his undercarriage, clips the post, and bounces home.

45’ - KYLE WALKER IS SENT-OFF! Defending a long hump from Pickford, he turns, has a look, and backs Calvert-Lewin in the phizog - well, it looks like he does, and Calvert-Lewin definitely collapses as if he has. This earns him a second yellow card, so off he pops amid much consternation. Lovely stuff!
77’ - SAVE! Danilo barges in from the right, arrives inside the box, and picks up Sterling's pass before cutting onto his left foot and driving hard and low ... Pickford does superbly to shovel it away with a strong hand.
82’ - GOAL! Manchester City 1-1 Everton (Sterling). Danilo is given time to cross, coming inside on his left foot so to do, and Holgate, who's had a fine game, bumps a header back into, instead of away from danger. The ball falls perfectly for Sterling, who drills a low volley past Pickford. That's a very good finish.

89’ - RED CARD SCHNEIDERLIN! He slides in hard to shove the ball away from Aguero, catching him with his trailing leg. Aguero intimates agony, and the second yellow is duly shown. Harsh.
90+3’ - CLOSE! Sterling gambols past Keane and into the box ... he's got a sight of goal! But he lashes a cross behind everyone instead!
90+4’ - AND AGAIN! Danilo makes ground down the right and crosses towards the far side ... but Klaassen stretches every sinew and follicle to takes the ball away from Aguero! That is a goal-saving intervention!

KEY STATS

Raheem Sterling's goal was the first conceded by Everton in 441 minutes of play so far this season.
