Jamaal Lascelles headed the winner for Newcastle United 15 minutes after clearing an almost certain goal off his own line in a 1-0 win over Swansea.
The home team dominated the possession stats, with debutant Renato Sanches seeing a lot of the ball but often wasting it.
His failure to create any real openings summed up Swansea's day as they failed to really test Rob Elliot in the Newcastle goal.
The best chance fell to the on-loan Tammy Abraham as he rounded Elliot after being played through by Leroy Fer. He looked certain to score but Lascelles did brilliantly to get back and make a block.

The Newcastle skipper then rose above Alfie Mawson in the Swansea box to power a header past Lukasz Fabianski and give his team the lead.
It was tough on Fabianski, who had reacted brilliantly earlier to tip away a header from Joselu.

The result sees Newcastle, who were without manager Rafa Benitez as he recovered from surgery, move above Swansea and up to 10th in the league.

TALKING POINT

Renato Sanches will need time: A lot of people were very quick to dismiss Sanches after his debut for the Swans but that seems incredibly harsh. This is a player who has barely had any football over the past year and is still getting his match sharpness back. That will take time to come and Paul Clement needs to have patience with the youngster. There was flashes of brilliance and once he gets back up to speed he should be a very useful player.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Jamaal Lascelles (Newcastle United): One of the easier picks for a man of the match award. Lascelles was not only excellent defensively but he was the difference at both ends of the pitch. His determination to block Abraham's shot was crucial and his leap for the goal was remarkable. The captain is going to be a vital figure this season for the Magpies.
