Liverpool were left to rue missed chances as Wayne Rooney's first ever goal in a Merseyside derby earned Everton an unlikely 1-1 draw at Anfield.
The Reds dominated throughout and looked on course to take the bragging rights once more when Mo Salah curled home a sensational effort just before the break to net his 19th of the season.
However, Dejan Lovren's clumsy shove on Dominic Calvert-Lewin resulted in a penalty that Rooney smashed down the middle 13 minutes from time.

It was hugely frustrating for the hosts who failed to move up to third in the table as Sam Allardyce's decision to 'park the bus' paid dividends for the Toffees.
The result means Liverpool remain in fourth, with Everton jumping above Southampton, who drew 1-1 with Arsenal earlier in the day, into 10th.

TALKING POINT

Klopp's team selection. The Reds boss made six changes to the side that thumped Spartak Moscow 7-0 in midweek - including the decision to split up the formidable 'Fab Four.' Seeing both Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino start on the bench will have given Allardyce and Co a real lift and there's no doubt that, while the visitors rode their luck at times, Liverpool lacked the pace and flair in attack that had seen them score so freely in recent weeks.
Salah looked to have spared his manager the post-match questions about it backfiring, but the German then took his leading scorer off at 1-0 and Lovren's moment of madness ultimately proved costly.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool). Lit up the afternoon with a sublime moment of genius. Ran Martina ragged and was the bright spark in the Liverpool side, who bossed possession but struggled to test Jordan Pickford despite plenty of attempts. Klopp may well look back and wish he'd left the Egyptian on the field.
