Everton have confirmed that they are looking to agree a deal with Switzerland captain Johann Vogel, who is free to leave La Liga's Real Betis.
Midfielder Vogel, 30, only joined Los Verdiblancos last summer from Italian outfit Milan, but would be allowed to leave the Manuel Ruiz de Lopera on a free transfer.
"We are in negotiations with the player and he will be coming shortly to discuss personal terms with a view to signing a contract," chief executive Keith Wyness told the Toffees' official website.
The squad depart on Thursday for a pre-season tour of the United States and, should a deal be reached, Vogel will join them on the flight out.
The holding midfielder has a wealth of experience in international football and the Champions League.
Everton boss David Moyes is looking to strengthen his midfield further following the capture of Sheffield United's Phil Jagielka for £4 million as the club challenge for the UEFA Cup in 2007-2008.
They qualified for the competition with a sixth-placed finish in the Premiership last season, while Betis narrowly avoided relegation from Spain's top division.
