And: Rivaldo's son makes his mark, while Leroy Sane... Leroy Sane.... well. You'll just have to see for yourself.

FRIDAY'S BIG HEADLINES

Wayne Rooney: The Return

It was premiere night in Liverpool as this world-famous production returns to Merseyside following a glorious 13-year residence in Manchester – and the reviews are in!
Yes, the boldest and brightest football critics (or those not on holiday at least) were dispatched to Goodison Park to feast their eyes on 'Wayne Rooney: The Return', a joint production featuring a touring troupe from Slovakia known as Ruzomberok.
Cast member Leighton Baines was the surprise hit of the night in what is being described as a (1-0) triumph for Bill Kenwright's old production house. But how did the new leading man fare?

** - Andy Hunter, The Guardian

Rooney kicked off the new season at Goodison and had three chances of varying difficulty to open the scoring in a sterile first half. The first he created for himself, spinning on Leighton Baines’s ball into the box and shooting over from a tight angle. The second was the clearest but, having controlled a cut-back from Dominic Calvert-Lewin in front of goal, Rooney scuffed his second touch straight at the goalkeeper, Matus Macik, while off-balance. He then missed Cuco Martina’s cross completely when attempting a first-time volley on the edge of the Ruzomberok area.

Rooney would have felt wanted, starting at centre-forward, the focus of every camera lens. He did not finish as a centre-forward and his first competitive game for Everton in 13 years was not the stuff of heroes. He had spent hour upon hour on the bikes at his brother-in-law’s spinning studio to get fit for his comeback. But will and desire alone are never enough.

The Everton side that Rooney left behind upon moving to Old Trafford 13 years ago finished as low as they ever did during David Moyes’s ten full campaigns in charge. Everton’s first half was of an unfortunate 2004 vintage, albeit Rooney featuring as the 2017 version of himself: a player struggling to impose himself on proceedings, isolated from the rest of his team-mates and losing his composure when opportunities were there to score, swiping wildly upon being served by Daniel Calvert-Lewin.

* - Dominic King, The Mail

They came in their droves hoping to see a debut to remember, daring to dream that the second coming would feature goals and fireworks. Wayne Rooney was the same. He had hoped to relaunch his Everton career with a goal and a command performance but the reality was different. In a war of attrition, against opponents who were determined to frustrate and disrupt, the fairytale never threatened to come true.

* - Liam Prenderville, The Mirror

Rooney's fortunes didn't improve too much after the break as he struggled for service. When he did get a touch, the England legend was swarmed by Ruzomberok players before conceding possession. The introduction of Sandro Ramirez allowed Rooney to drop deeper and he seemed to move further – and further – back as the game went on in a desperate bid to dictate the play. It worked too with the Spanish striker changing the game in the final half hour. Should Ronald Koeman get his wish, a target man will arrive before the end of the window and Rooney probably won't be asked to lead the line too often.
A few things to work on, then...

Lionesses set up France showdown

England's impressively serene progress at Euro 2017 continued last night as they to reach the quarter-finals with three wins from three in the group.
The next test for the Lionesses is a tricky match against France in the last eight but they will surely fancy their chances.
England had a helping hand when Portugal keeper Patricia Morais sent an awful clearance straight to Toni Duggan, who finished with a sublime chip. But it was a polished display overall.

And the most impressive thing? Mark Sampson actually made 10 changes from the team who beat Spain.
Meanwhile, Scotland were knocked out despite their stunning win over the Spanish.

Famous offspring tops Europa round-up

Rivaldinho is, as his name suggests, the son of the great Rivaldo, and if at 22 his career hasn't been quite as stellar as his old man's quite yet, he did enjoy his own moment of fame last night, scoring this ridiculous goal for Steaua Bucharest against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League qualifiers last night:
And yes, that was Rivaldo celebrating wildly in the stands. Get your full list of results here if you must Liam Prenderville – but nothing else really matters.

HEROES AND ZEROES

Heroes: Hummel

Okay, it's ultimately being done to flog some kit, but that's capitalism for you. We still like this simple but effective advert starring the Danish national women's team.

Zero: Leroy Sane

In yesterday's Warm-Up, Jack Lang discussed Kylian Mbappe and the Alan Partridge fever dream induced by the scene of a young Mbappe surrounded by posters of Cristiano Ronaldo. Friday's Warm-Up is reminded of the very same Partridge episode, when he is confronted by his stalker, except the unhinged individual with a bizarre tattoo of Leroy Sane on their body is, er, Leroy Sane.

IN THE CHANNELS

Anyone who has been forced to endure the American adaptation of Spaced (seriously, it's so bad you'd rather slowly crush your fingers with bricks than watch it) will be only too aware that not all original formats survive the trip across the Atlantic. But full marks to Los Angeles FC for embracing this summer's big trend in England and using a neat little viral Twitter video to announce their new manager.
Yes, dressed like your freshly divorced uncle who's suddenly claiming to be into Stormzy, that's only Bob bloody Bradley. He might have been a flop at Swansea but it's a huge coup for the new addition to MLS, who start competing in 2018. Will Ferrell is one of the LAFC owners, by the way, so The Warm-Up is expecting even bigger and better things from their social media channels. A Blades of Glory reboot perhaps?

COMING UP

It's a rest day at Euro 2017 but never fear, the Bundesliga 2 is back as Bochum host St Pauli. Ah, maybe not. At the weekend, though, a gentle reminder that our friends over at Quest have live coverage of the Emirates Cup.
Adam Hurrey is on duty on Monday, provided he hasn't sought treatment for his crippling addiction to vintage football shirts.
