And there's the full-time whistle! It was scrappy, but Argentina won't care.
A Lionel Messi penalty in the first half is enough to hand them all three points. A vital win in their pursuit to make the World Cup next year.
- OffCharles AránguizChile
- OnEsteban ParedesChile
Short stoppage in injury time with Aranguiz down and he is forced to go off...

Entering stoppage time now and Argentina are just minutes away from closing out a vital victory.
Chile upping the ante somewhat as we edge towards full-time and Otamendi is there to get a vital head onto a cross with Vargas ready to pounce.
Argentina have a free-kick and it gives Banega the chance to cross one in. It doesn't come off though and it's straight out for a goal-kick.
BIG MISS! Oh Castillo what an opportunity that is for Chile. Beausejour's cross takes a deflection but somehow Castillo sends the ball wide.
- OffGabriel MercadoArgentina
- OnFacundo RoncagliaArgentina
And indeed that is Mercado's night over...
- Yellow cardNicolás OtamendiArgentina
Now it's Otamendi who finds his way into the referee's book. He gives away a free-kick on the edge of the area but there's a wee stoppage in play with Mercado down.
- Yellow cardGonzalo HiguaínArgentina
Silly foul from Higuain, who has been quiet tonight in the attacking sense. And he gets a yellow for a late challenge.
- OffFrancisco SilvaChile
- OnJorge ValdiviaChile
Another sub now with under 20 minutes to go...
Vargas almost capitalises on a miscommuncation between Mascherano and Otamendi but they just about manage to clear the danger.
Well, well, well. What a chance that was for Chile. Argentia just looking to close the game out it seems but there's plenty of time left for the visitors to find an equaliser. Risky tactic.
OFF THE BAR! You can't keep a quality side quiet for long, especially with players like Sanchez. Chile earn a free-kick just outside the area and Alexis' strike cannons off the crossbar with Romero rooted to the spot.
Elsewhere... Yes, you read that right. A Paulinho HAT-TRICK.
OVER! Rojo picks out Messi inside the area, but he can't quite sort his feet out and he's off balance when taking the shot which flies over.
Just under half an hour to go and someone needs to tell Chile that they could end the evening sixth in the standings unless they up their game here. Showing little in the way of attacking threat but of course than can always change in an instant.
- OffSergio AgüeroArgentina
- OnÉver BanegaArgentina
Little in the way of chances to report of but that's Aguero's night over as he heads off, with Banega on to take his place.
- OffJosé FuenzalidaChile
- OnNicolás CastilloChile
First change now for Chile with the booked Fuenzalida heading off...
Again Argentina come on the attack and it's Mercado who bursts down the wing before sending in a low cross, but his ball in is dealth with easily.
Argentina win a free-kick and Messi looks to bend one in but Chile manage to clear the danger.
- OffEmmanuel MasArgentina
- OnMateo MusacchioArgentina
Sub at half-time for Argentina. But it's Chile who must really force the issue this half. Will we see more of Sanchez? He showed mere glimpses in the first half.
- 2nd Half
The referee gets us underway in the second half. Argentina, who really should be 2-0 up after Otamendi's miss towards the end of the opening 45, get us underway.
Messi sends Bravo the wrong way...
Spot on from Messi...
- End of 1st Half
And there goes the half-time whistle. Argentina lead thanks to a Messi penalty. An incredibly scrappy half but the hosts will find themselves third in the CONEMBOL table if they stay ahead.
WHAT A CHANCE! How has Otamendi missed this? The defender gets it all wrong as he fires over from close-range. Poor from the Argentine and that's a real let-off for Chile just before the break.
All talk of the Argentina attack but it's their defence who are standing firm and repelliny any Chile attack so far. The visitors are enjoying more of the ball but there's just no way through at the moment.
Chile just looking out of sorts. Particularly after going a goal down. Vargas picks up a loose ball but once he advances to the edge of the Argentina area he can't find a way through and Argentina clear the danger.
It has been a scrappy game in truth and one that Argentina will be delighted to be leading. The pitch is incredibly poor and it has led to some poor tackles so far, and little in the way of clear-cut chances.
Three yellow cards picked up so far this match, but somehow Rojo escapes one for a poor challenge on Sanchez, who had edged towards the Argentina area following a lovely flowing move.
Chile doing their utmost to get back into this one. They win a corner but nothing comes of it and Argentina manage to clear their lines.
Huge goal and a big moment early on in the game. It was a soft penalty but Argentina won't care - they lead 1-0!
- Goal by penaltyLionel MessiArgentina
ARGENTINA 1-0 CHILE
Messi scores from the penalty spot! Ice cool from the Barcelona forward, 269 days after missing in the Copa America final shootout against the same opposition.
- Yellow cardJosé FuenzalidaChile
PENALTY TO ARGENTINA! Fuenzalida brings down Di Maria with the cross coming in and Messi has the chance to score from the spot.
SAVE! Messi picks out Di Maria and out comes Bravo to close down the danger. Di Maria gets there first and attempts to chip Bravo but he manages to save it.
WIDE! It's a tidy turn from Messi who then plays it forward for Higuain on the edge of the area, but he gets his shot all wrong and shoots wide of the mark.
- Yellow cardCharles AránguizChile
Now that is an early yellow... It's a little harsh on Aranguiz, who brings down Messi with the Argentine charging into Chile's half, and the referee deems it cynical enough to hand out a first booking of the match.
A let off for Argentina there who have been caught out by a couple of impressive passes from Sanchez. Pitch looking a little dead and it's making it very hard for either side to pass it round on the turf.
CHILE GOAL RULED OUT! And it's a great decision from the linesman...
Sanchez's brilliant cross is met by Aranguiz, whose header is saved by Romero and there is Fuenzalida to tap in the rebound. But he was offside by half a yard or so, and the offside flag rightly goes up.
A brilliant searching ball from Alexis picks out Aranguiz, but his touch is poor and Argentina recover the ball.
Down the other end Di Maria sends in a teasing ball but Messi isn't near it. The PSG man looks a little disappointed - decent cross in truth.
All Argentina in the early stages here. Nothing too pressing but they're just enjoying possession and trying to stamp their authority on the game.
First few touches for Claudio Bravo in the Chile goal. Another intriguing angle to this game, how will the Man City keeper fare? Making his 111th appearance for La Roja tonight.
- 1st Half
And we are underway in Buenos Aires. SIx games to go for either side, and this one neither can really afford to lose.
AS IT STANDS
Just before we get underway, it's worth noting that Argentina now start OUT of the top five following Colombia's victory.
And with Chile fifth, neither side currently occupy a spot which guarantees automatic qualification.
Top four through. FIfth into play-off with Oceanic nation. Sixth gets nothing. Huge game.
What a welcome for the two sides, and in a bid to make it as intimidating as possible, fireworks are being set off, and how the Chile national anthem is being roundly jeered and whistled by the home fans. You can just make out the travelling supporters singing with proud. Wow. Intense atmosphere already.
Just five minutes to go for this match but that's not all in the way of CONEMBOL action tonight, and Brazil's match in Uruguay is currently 1-1 after 25 minutes played. Paulinho cancelling out Cavani's opener.
Aguero returns to start for Argentina tonight and he's part of a frighteningly good front four. Messi, Higuain and Di Maria will join him up front. WIll they turn on the style tonight?
TIME FOR REVENGE?
FIve days ago Wenger uttered those exact words when describing Alexis Sanchez's ankle... Tonight the Chilean starts against Argentina. All seems well then! WIll certainly be worth keeping an eye on how the Arsenal man looks throughout.
Argentina XI: Romero; Mercado, Otamendi, Rojo, Mas; Mascherano, Biglia; Di Maria, Messi, Aguero, Higuain.
Chile XI: Bravo; Isla, Medel, Jara, Beausejour; Silva, Aránguiz, Hernández; Fuenzalida, Vargas, Alexis.
Evening all, welcome to the live text commentary for Argentina's World Cup Qualifier against Chile. There is plenty on the line tonight with Argentina fifth in the CONEMBOL qualifying table. Only the top four are guaranteed an automatic spot, and that final place is currently occupied by Chile. What a match we have in store!
Oh, and the last time these two played was the Copa America final... Will Messi get his revenge?
