Aaron Cresswell and Jordan Pickford called into England squad

The West Ham left back has earnt his first call up after the withdrawal of Danny Drinkwater while the Sunderland goalkeeper will replace Fraser Forster who has also been deemed unfit.

Cresswell has only played three matches for the Hammers this season following a knee injury and a red card against Crystal Palace. The 26-year-old will compete with Ryan Bertrand and Danny Rose - who has struggled with hamstring and foot problems in recent weeks - for the left-back berth.

"Of course, I am delighted to receive a call-up and it’s a very proud moment for me and my family," he said.

"It is every boy’s dream to play for their country and I am looking forward to the next two weeks."

Pickford has been promoted from the Under 21s, where he was due to face Italy and France, to deputise for Torino's Joe Hart and Burnley's Tom Heaton.

Gareth Southgate had many injury concerns in his first squad last month, with Heaton, Glen Johnson and Raheem Sterling all pulling out with injury. Following the latest setbacks, his biggest problem is now whether to play Harry Kane, who returned from an ankle injury for Tottenham in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday.

“The first thing we have to do with Harry is check how he is after yesterday,” said Southgate, whose four-game deal expires after the Spain match.

“I think Spurs, maybe with Dele missing, took a decision for what was a very big game for them. We have a big game ourselves so we need to see what level Harry’s at when he reports, but it was great to see him back scoring and with a smile on his face at the end of the game.”
