Gibson, 24, came through the youth system at Middlesbrough and broke into the first team following a series of loans.
He was a key player in their promotion push and has drawn praise for his performances in the Premier League, including links to league leaders Chelsea.
It was announced on Friday that he had been added to the squad for the first time as Smalling had to return to Manchester United due to his injury whilst Cahill has returned to Chelsea as he is unavailable due to suspension.
England currently top Group F with three wins and a draw from their opening four games and are yet to concede a goal.
Lithuania have only won one game, a 2-0 win over Malta, and England will be keen to further tighten their grip on the group.
