Paper Round: Wayne Rooney caught in 'wedding photo exclusive', England 'Dummies' squander game

The Sun breathes "new life" into a second day of stories about Wayne Rooney having one too many at a wedding (admittedly one he apparently wasn't invited to) with some less than flattering photos of him. Along with the now obligatory speculation about the United player's next move, the nation is invited to cast similar aspersions.

Paper Round’s view: Poor old Wayne, will anybody ever leave him alone? Of course they won't - he's the England captain! We're sure, like us, you've found yourself at the mercy of a dodgy photo tag on Facebook in your time, and its not always as funny as the poster of said picture might think, so we have a degree of sympathy for Rooney. To say this story - and a number swirling around Rooney at the moment - was sensationalist would be putting it mildly. Yes it he has hit an awkward time in his career, but at 31-years-old, this is not exactly unheard of and we'd do well to remember that.

The vast majority of Wednesday's back pages focus on England squandering a two goal lead against Spain in the dying moments of Tuesday's game to draw 2-2. Of course Jamie Vardy's "Mannequin Challenge" celebration made it all too easy for a number of publications who prove just how changeable the Twittersphere and indeed the England team can be - you were loving Vardy's shapes five minutes ago! Still, if five minutes is the length of time it takes to lose a match...

Paper Round’s view: We agree, it's desperately annoying that this happened and we'd rather it hadn't but... we also kind of think it;s one of the few times we can remember watching England play and not wanting to scratch our own eyes out. The attacking, for example, well it was alright. England's defensive frailties are not news to us, and we're sure they're not news to Gareth Southgate either, but neither Rome nor an impenetrable back four were built in a day.

The Mirror reports that John Terry's former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas wants the defender to reunite with him at Shanghai SIPG in the China's Super League. There would doubtless be big money in it for the 35-year-old who must surely be leaving Stamford Bridge at the end of the season?

Paper Round’s view: We're sure the Super League and Shanghai would be very happy to have Terry as they continue to try to bolster the global pulling power of the league, we're just not sure we see it as the natural home for JT. The US Super League would seem a more obvious choice for Terry, but having played just one game in the last two months after picking up an ankle injury, perhaps an even better destination for him would be off the pitch.

The ICC will apparently seek permission to read the messages of cricketers under suspicion of match-fixing, the Guardian writes on Wednesday. The Chairman of the sport's anti-corruption unit, Sir Ronnie Flannagan, said with players increasingly using social media to organise dodgy dealings, current rules that allow investigators to request phone records no longer go far enough.

Paper Round’s view: It's not a done deal, Sir Ronnie isn't about to impose anything that hasn't been consulted on or agreed to by the relevant parties, he said, but he's got a point. The world moves on, technology moves on, ways of conducting dodgy dealings move on, ergo investigations around dodgy dealings need to keep pace with that, for the good of the game.
