21:38

So there we go. Thanks for your company, and night-night.

21:37

So, as expected, Portugal did the necessary. They were just too streetwise and too technical for Switzerland, who couldn't land a glove on them, and were good value for their win. It'll take a good side to stop them in Russia.

21:36

Portugal 2-0 Switzerland PORTUGAL QUALIFY FOR THE WORLD CUP! SWITZERLAND GO INTO THE PLAY-OFFS!

90+3'

Portugal charge forward on the break and Bernardo has the ball, but misses the chance to feed Ronaldo so has to check inside and outside Zakaria before having a shot deflected wide.

90'

There'll be three added minutes.

90'

Danilo replaces Joao Mario.

87'

Moutinho flicks over the top and Ronaldo is in pursuit, but the bounce takes the ball into the arms of the advancing Sommer.

87'

Switzerland just haven't been able to get anything going - not one shot on target as far as I can recall.

84'

Lichtensteiner goes down the right and stands up a cross, which Cedric nods upwards before Pepe completes the clearance.

84'

Elsewhere, Romelu Lukaku has scored for Belgium, my dark horses to win the World Cup. A tap-in, one hopes and presumes.

83'

Birtles is now complaining that Switzerland haven't been offside enough. Yes, that's been exactly their problem.

82'

Switzerland are going to finish second in their group with nine wins out of 10. That is the beautiful game.

80'

Ronaldo is in on goal! Sliding through at inside-left, he decides to show off by rounding Sommer, who stands up well and smothers the ball.

79'

Portugal win a corner down the right, hit deep into the box; Djourou can only deflect it back inside, and Pepe doesn't connect properly with his shot. That was a good chance.

78'

Meanwhile, Greece lead Gibraltar 2-0, and will be that group's play-off representative.

77'

Belgium lead Cyprus 3-0; Eden Hazard has scored twice and Thorgan Hazard once.

76'

Andre Gomes finds space in behind and crosses fro the right of the box, but charging in, Ronaldo can't quite get the touch that would put this group beyond even the merest doubt.

75'

Andre Silva departs, his job done. Andre Gomes replaces him.

74'

Good snap, crap pun.

73'
72'

Madonna is in the ground. Andre Silva should've celebrated by vogueing.

70'

Zakaria shoves over Andre Silva and is booked. "That referee is having one," says Birtles, and he should know.

68'

Eliseu has hurt himself, so Antunes comes on. "An attacking left-back replaced by a more defensive one," says Rob Palmer; "like for like," says Garry Birtles.

67'

Shaqiri bursts forward and shoots from 20-odd yards, left-to-right; Seferovic jabs out a foot and gets a touch, but the ball whooshes past the post.

66'

Double change for Switzerland: off go Dzemaili and Mehmedi, who've done nowt, and on come Zuber and Embolo.

64'

Switzerland have won nine from nine in this group so far; assuming they end up with nine from 10, it's really a whack in the goolies for that not to be enough for automatic qualification.

63'

Switzerland, who've done nothing in ages, break in numbers and Mehmedi has the ball, He looks to switch play inside, instead wafting miles from anywhere. He knows it's gone.

61'

Portugal have been much more aggressive half-time, and bent the game to their will.

60'
59'

Silva leaves one on Shaqiri and yet again escapes a booking. He's having a great night!

57'

GREAT GOAL! Portugal 2-0 Switzerland (Andre Silva) Portugal are going to Russia! And they've sealed it with a fine team goal, Cedrid finding Bernardo, who finds Moutinho just outside the box ... and Moutinho slides him back in, deep inside the box ... he crosses low, and Silva, seeing it through a crowd, manages to play the ball behind his standing leg by mistake, then maintains equilibrium to slide a finish into the unguarded net. That's 11 in 10 for him.

55'

Portugal are playing better now, and Ronaldo picks out Bernardo on the right, accepts the return, and now in the D, goes with his right not his left and skews a drive high and wide.

54'

Bernardo plucks the ball out of the air, juggles a bit, and sets Ronaldo running at inside-left. But he runs out of pitch before he can get a cross in.

50'

Andre Silva flings himself to the ground after Lichtensteiner blatantly glances at him, so on the blind side of the ref, Lichtensteiner knees him in the head and tries to trample his hand; lovely stuff.

49'

Kategorie Dreckstor is a great phrase, whatever it means.

48'

Great focusing, lads.

47'

Switzerland made a change at half-time, Zakaria replacing Freuler.

46'

Andre Silva, who should've been booked first half, fouls Xhaka and escapes another card.

46'

Switzerland get us away again.

20:34

It's been a slog for the European champs, but they found a way. Switzerland now have to do the same, against one of the best-drilled defences on the planet, while not letting the best player on the planet, nor any of his pals, score another.

20:34

Half-time: Portugal 1-0 Switzerland

45'

Shaqiri plays the ball infield - there's no threat - but Eliseu shoves him in the back anyway, and is booked. Foolish behaviours.

45'

Belarus have pulled one back in France; Netherlands have doubled their advantage against Sweden.

43'

Andre Silva leaps for a high ball and misses, but behind him, Freuler, already booked, controls with his arm. The ref turns a blind eye.

41'

GOAL! Portugal 1-0 Switzerland (Djourou own goal) Eliseu crosses brilliantly from the left and schar, sliding towards hiw own net can't get a touch. So Sommer comes out as Joao Mario lunges ... the attacker gets a flick, and Djourou can't get out of the road, knocking it home.

41'

Bernardo drives a long, er, diag for Ronaldo, who's timed his run well. But he can't make anything of it.

40'

Unless there's a fault with my ears or my telly, Garry Birtles has just advised Cristiano Ronaldo on how to score goals.

38'

Ronaldo comes in off the right and flings himself into a shot. it's blocked.

38'
36'

Giroud has added to Griezmann's opener - France lead Belarus 2-0 and are off to Russia.

35'

Freuler puts a ball into the box for Seferovic to chase, and Eliseu comes across ... Pepe too. By the look of things they both clip him, but the ref reckons not. I've no idea why.

34'

That's not only just the closest we've been to a goal but the only time we've been remotely close to a goal.

32'

Ronaldo dribbles across the face of the box from left to right, trips over, and claims a foul. It's no such thing, but it distracts the defenders, so Moutinho is able to curve a pass with the outside of his boot into the path of Bernardo, inside the box on its left. He should go low to the far post but goes high to the near, and Sommer beats away.

32'

Apparently the Netherlands' goal came from a penalty, after Victor Lindelof booted a clearance into his own hand.

31'

Bernardo tees Moutinho up for a cross, and he, very deliberately, guides it into Sommer's midriff.

29'

Elsewhere, France lead Belarus and Netherlands lead Sweden.

28'

Freuler throws his arms wide to trap a ball on his chest, it kicks off the turf more than he expected and flicks an arm. The ref penalises him so he kicks the ball away and is booked, because this was an offence far worse than Silva's high, dangerous challenge a few minutes ago.

27'

Switzerland win a free-kick and Rodriguez sticks it to the far post, where Schar nods it back ... Pepe does well to nod clear.

26'
24'

Ronaldo digs out a cross from the by-line after a poor pass, but no one's running to the near post. Seconds later, Djourou stretches to clear and Andre Silva flies at him, landing with studs and somehow avoiding a booking. Treatment is duly administered.

23'

I think I might speak Portuguese.

22'

Switzerland are very composed, as you'd expect from such a grooved, confident side. They knock the ball from right to left before Rodriguez sticks it in the box, and Carvalho is on hand to clear.

20'

Moutinho plays a one-two off Eliseu and finds Ronaldo, now on the right touchline. He's got little on so goes backwards, and eventually Cedric overhits a cross.

19'

Switzerland are doing pretty well, basically.

17'

Portgual are finding space down the right, and Ronaldo sets Bernardo away again. He rolls back for Moutinho, who crosses miles beyond the back post.

16'

Andre Silva's run off the ball allows Bernardo to run at the heart of the defence and jink inside, but the defenders stand firm, refusing to commit while restricting the space, and Switzerland clear.

14'

Good little spell for Switzerland, who again get the ball wide and Mehmedi crosses, just behind Seferovic.

13'

Nice from Rodriguez, barging down the left and fooling Bernardo with a stepover, then driving a cross into Cedric; corner. It comes to nowt.

11'

Andre Silva flicks on for Ronaldo, who finds Bernardo. His cross isn't bad but is seen away nonetheless.

10'
9'

Portugal are playing like the European champions, like a team who've won eight straight, and they take a free-kick quickly, spreading play to Cedric, haring down the line. His cross drifts behind.

7'

The pattern is set: Portugal are dominating possession, with Switzerland sitting deep in order to break. Moutinho crosses, and Schar forces a header clear.

5'

Shaqiri shoves Eliseu in the back for absolutely no reason whatsoever, and Portugal have an opportunity to put the ball into the box. The first cross is headed clear, then Mario wriggles back towards the danger zone, flicks outside him for Andre Silva, and his shot is deflected back to Sommer, who still has to dive to save.

4'

Andre Silva shoves Rodriguez in the back, and there's mass indignation at the award of a free-kick to Switzerland.

3'

Tangentially, Djourou versus Ronaldo sounds fun.

3'

Course Granit Xhaka has had himself the number 10 shirt.

2'
1'

Switzerland are going for this, a 4-3-3 formation showing they want to score, and right away they put a long ball into the right channel for Seferovic to chase. Nothing comes of it, but it's a statement of intent.

1'

We're away!

19:46

There's a belting atmopshere in the ground - and what's odd is that Portugal fans can legitimately expect their team to take care of business. That must feel very odd indeed.

19:44

Ronaldo nods knowingly. He's right up for this one.

19:44

That Portugal anthem is a tune.

19:41

Sky don't bother with any preamble - we're straight in to the anthems.

19:41

Controversial.

19:40

I reckon Portgual will win this, a Ronaldo penalty, then a late goal.

19:34

The new Estádio da Luz is probably what the Emirates was trying to be.

19:30

And this is Switzerland's.

19:29

Portugal actually have a pretty nifty squad; this is their bench.

19:25

Crazy as you like, them Swiss.

19:18
19:14

In fact it's hard to see beyond Portugal in general. Switzerland beat them at the start of qualifying, but they were still on their post-Euros holiday, and Ronaldo was injured. They'll be dangerous - Shaqiri can mess with any team - but Portugal are so well-drilled at the back now that you'd back them to do the necessary.

19:10

There's no way old zit farm from Madeira doesn't score tonight, right?

19:04
19:03

Teams!

18:44

Evening all! This game is an absolute monster! The two top teams in Group B meet, split by three points; if Portugal win, they qualify for the World Cup, any other result and Switzerland are making plans. That's not the end of the story, of course - there are play-offs to be played-off - but with Italy, Croatia and maybe France lurking, no one will much fancy that route. So here we go!
