Confusion reigned over the fate of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel on Monday after various websites reported that he had been disqualified from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The German was involved in a ramming incident with Lewis Hamilton and later went to a hearing with FIA after finishing fourth.
It was reported last week that FIA had launched a formal investigation into whether further action should be taken over the collision.
And numerous outlets then reported on Monday that the four-time world champion had been disqualified from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and docked 12 points.
However, Autosprint magazine in Italy found the source of the news and declared that a document purporting to be an official communication from the FIA was, in fact, a fake.
Many of the news sites later deleted their tweets and stories.
It was later revealed that Vettel would face no further punishment after apologising for the incident and receiving a 10-second stop-and-go penalty at the time.
