Formula E to return to Berlin Tempelhof

The electric single-seater series has had to revert to the famous terminal for its German round after being forced away from the street circuit it used in the capital last year.

Tempelhof hosted the inaugural Berlin ePrix in 2015, with a 17-turn, 1.5-mile track constructed on the apron section of the disused airport.

Formula E will race on a revised version of that layout in June, with details to follow.

The series was forced to move to a street-circuit near the Alexanderplatz last year after the German government used Tempelhof to house refugees fleeing from countries in conflict in late 2015.

"Motorsport with electric motors is an advertisement for innovative technologies and sustainable urban mobility," Berlin mayor , Michael Muller said.

"Electromobility is the key to environmentally friendly transport in the cities of the 21st century, including Berlin.

"I am therefore delighted that Formula E continues to take place here.

"The event thrills motorsport fans and proves - in a spectacular way, in front of a special backdrop - the performance of this technology to a wide audience."

Tempelhof was a key terminal during the second world war and the cold war.

It ceased operating in 2008 after more than 80 years, but has since been used for music festivals and other events, and has been turned into a public park.

A second German round could be on the cards if the Brussels ePrix is dropped from the 2016/17 schedule, as is expected.

Hamburg has been mooted as one option by local media.
