McIlroy, a lifelong United fan, spoke on a Facebook live chat at a European Tour event, in which he answered fans' questions.
And he was full of praise for United's success in securing the services of ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Mourinho.
"I like it," he said. "I’m optimistic about Jose and United. It will be interesting to see.
"The signings he has made already seem to be good and there is a lot of optimism among the fans.
"I’m certainly more optimistic than I was last year, so hopefully good things happen and we can contend for the title.”
McIlroy also praised newly-crowned Open champion Henrik Stenson for an "unbelievable performance" at Royal Troon, calling it, "the best someone has ever played."
And McIlroy also shed some light on what happened when he himself won the Open, two years ago at Hoylake.
"Jagermeister," he said. "Not my choice. Some of my friends got to it before I did!"
