Downie dominates to make history in Euro qualifying

Her progression into every available final in Cluj means the 17-year-old makes history as the first-ever female British gymnast to make every final at an international event.

Downie topped the overall rankings with a score of 56.198, as well as leading the way on the vault and floor, with scores of 14.433 and 13.900.

And by finishing sixth on the bars and seventh on the beam she completed a highly successful day for Great Britain, with the four-strong team also making four other finals between them.

"I definitely exceeded my expectations," said British all-around champion Downie. "It was one of my best qualifying performances across all pieces so I'm really happy.

"Floor was definitely the stand-out apparatus for me, my new routine seems to get a lot of attention and when the music kicks in it gets the crowd going.

"I feel like I'm pretty much up there in Europe and the world now. I always feel like I don't know how good I am until I look up and see my score, it's always a real surprise for me."

Elsewhere in Romania, Downie's older sister Becky also made the bar and beam finals, after qualifying in fourth and eighth places, respectively.

Meanwhile Claudia Fragapane missed out on the beam final, but progressed on the floor after scoring 13.766, to qualify second behind Downie.

And Alice Kinsella, a late call-up to the team following the withdrawal of Georgia-Mae Fenton through injury, also made the all-around final with a score of 51.990 – good enough for 14th place.
