The Martyn Meade-trained four-year-old was a 50-1 shot to win what is one of the biggest handicaps of the season run over a distance of a mile and one furlong.
However, under apprentice jockey George Wood, Dolphin Vista headed a trio of outsiders for the top places, coming home by a length and a half from Sands Chorus in second at 100-1 and another 50-1 shot, Cote D’Azur, in third. Meade also saddled the fourth-placed Chelsea Lad for good measure.
A win for Wood and Meade looked unlikely early on as the winner looked to be at a disadvantage as the main action appeared to be developing on the far side after the 34-strong field split into two groups.
However that did not deter Wood who stuck to his task well and conjured up a winning run from his mount to stun his rivals to capture the biggest success of his career.
Based with Meade’s Newmarket neighbour, James Fanshawe, Wood emerged as a capable rider with 38 winners in his first full campaign last year, but the success of Dolphin Vista means he is now on 42 for this season.
Speaking afterwards, Wood said: “That was good and a little bit unexpected as he was a big price.
“I was a bit worried early on that we were on the wrong side, but he’s a game horse and picked up nicely.”
Also at Newmarket, trainer Aidan O’Brien moved closer to Bobby Frankel’s record of 25 Group One wins in a year as US Navy Flag won the colts’ Middle Park Stakes under Seamie Heffernan. Stablemate Fleet Review was beaten by half a length in second with Mark Johnston’s Cardsharp taking third.
Earlier, O’Brien was also in winning mood as Clemmie landed the Cheveley Park Stakes for fillies under jockey Ryan Moore to give him his first win in the juvenile fillies’ feature.
As a sister to this year’s 2,000 Guineas winner Churchill, O’Brien’s filly was likely to be suited to the Rowley Mile course and so it proved when she ran out a convincing winner by a length and three-quarters from Albany winner Different League in second and Madeline third.
Moore, who finished runner-up in the six-furlong contest on Roly Poly a year ago, was impressed. He said: “She travelled well throughout the race and is a progressive filly. It will be no surprise if she continues to progress.”
