Doyle secures feature race double, Crowley a trio of winners at Newmarket’s July Meeting

Jockey James Doyle shrugged off being given a 15-day ban by the British Horseracing Authority by winning both feature races on day one of the July Meeting at Newmarket.

Doyle’s streak of big-race wins showed no signs of easing as he rode Cardsharp to victory in the Arqana July Stakes, before also taking the Princess Of Wales’ Arqana Racing Club Stakes on Hawkbill.
It was also a successful afternoon for fellow jockey Jim Crowley as he took out a hat-trick of winners, two being the final races of the day.
Doyle’s double started in the second race of the afternoon, the Arqana July Stakes, where aboard the Mark Johnston-trained Cardsharp the pair stormed to a length and three-quarter success ahead of U S Navy Flag in second. Rajasinghe came in third a further three-quarters of a length back.
Doyle had to wait until the fourth race to complete his big race double which came in the Princess Of Wales’s Arqana Racing Club Stakes. Here it was the Charlie Appleby-trained Hawkbill came in three-quarters of a length clear of Frontiersman in second, with Algometer taking third place almost four lengths further back.
Crowley’s trio of successes got underway in the bet365 Handicap aboard the Roger Varian-trained Ekhtiyaar. In a close finish, the latter edged it at the line by a head from Ultimate Avenue in second and Golden Apollo half a length back in third.
The Stuart Williams-trained Shamshon gave Crowley a double in the penultimate race of the day, the John Deere Handicap, as they came in half a length ahead of outside Top Boy in second, with A Momentofmadness a close third.
The hat-trick was complete in the last race, the Sir Henry Cecil Stakes, which saw Beat The Bank come in a handy three-quarters of a length in front of Forest Ranger in second and D’bai in third.
Day 2 of Newmarket’s July Meeting tomorrow (Friday) is highlighted by the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes, due off at 2.25pm, and the Falmouth Stakes at 3.35pm
