Washington overpowered Toronto in a see-sawing contest, while the Blackhawks outclassed a Detroit side that had no answer for their skill.

Capitals 3, Maple Leafs 2

Defenseman Matt Niskanen's power-play goal at 9:31 of the third period lifted the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday.
The matchup between the teams with the most and least points in the NHL was tied when Toronto right winger Nikita Soshnikov was called for boarding with 9:20 left.
Seconds later, Niskanen took a pass from centre Nicklas Backstrom and fired a wrist shot from the point that got through a screen in front and past goaltender Jonathan Bernier.

Blackhawks 5, Red Wings 2

Artemi Panarin had two goals to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night at Joe Louis Arena.
Brent Seabrook a goal and three assists, Patrick Kane a goal and two assists and Andrew Ladd also scored for Chicago while Corey Crawford made 31 saves.
Brad Richards and Gustav Nyquist scored for Detroit while Petr Mrazek made saves.
