Frenzel wins fifth race of season to extend World Cup lead

The German was placed second after the ski jumping phase, with Mario Seidl recording a score of 133.1, to lead Frenzel by 6.6 points.

And the World Cup leader was far from the fastest over the 10km cross country course in Italy, but his time of 28:53.4 was good enough to take the win, ahead of countryman Johannes Rydzek who – despite clocking the fastest cross country time – still finished 24.2s behind his countryman.

The win is Frenzel’s fifth of the season and continued Germany’s dominance in the World Cup this term, with the leader, Rydzek and Fabian Riessle sharing first place in the nine races between them.

Norway’s Magnus Moan, 23rd after the ski jumping with just 107.4 points, recorded the second-fastest cross country time to finish third overall, just 1.7s behind Rydzek.

He led in a trio of Norwegians, with Espen Andersen and Magnus Krog coming in 0.8s and 1.2s behind their compatriot, respectively.

The win puts Frenzel 64 points ahead of Rydzek in the World Cup standings, with Riessle rounding out the top three a further 174 points behind the man in second place.

Racing continues on Sunday with another HS134 and 10km combined event in Val di Fiemme, the tenth of 22 scheduled World Cup races this season.
